OEA urges Venezuela to appoint representative for democratic transition
The Organization of American States (OEA) has called on Venezuela to appoint a permanent representative to the organization. OEA Secretary General Albert Ramdin stated that while Venezuela remains a legal member, its seat has been vacant since 2017 following attempts by the Nicolás Maduro administration to withdraw.
Ramdin emphasized that the OEA is prepared to assist Venezuela in its transition toward democracy and the holding of elections, provided there is a formal counterpart in Caracas to facilitate cooperation. He noted that while it does not appear that the current administration is planning an appointment, there are reportedly "conversations behind the scenes."
These developments follow the normalization of relations between Venezuela and the United States, occurring after a U.S. military operation in Caracas on January 3. Following these events, an interim government led by President Delcy Rodríguez has been formed.
