OASA telematics system restored after cyberattack

The telematics system of the Athens Organism of Urban Transportation (OASA) has returned to full operation following a four-day disruption caused by a cyberattack. OASA confirmed the incident but declined to release technical details regarding the breach or the identity of the perpetrators, stating that the attack was likely intended to disrupt the organization’s operations.

OASA clarified that the attack was limited to the telematics system, which provides real-time passenger information, and did not affect other information systems, passenger data, or the actual operation of bus and trolley routes. The National Cybersecurity Authority has been notified of the incident.

The disruption has drawn criticism from the Infrastructure and Transport Sector of EL.AS., which raised questions regarding administrative responsibility and operational readiness. The sector emphasized that the telematics system is critical digital infrastructure for Attica's public transport and argued that the duration of the outage suggests issues with management and contingency planning. They also noted the timing of the incident relative to the upcoming transition of the system's management following the expiration of previous contracts.
