Oaxaca achieves maize production self-sufficiency
Oaxaca has achieved self-sufficiency in maize production, surpassing the state administration's goal of 800,000 tons per six-year term. According to data from the Servicio de Información Agroalimentaria y Pesquera (SIAP), production reached 819,450.07 tons in 2025.
Governor Salomón Jara Cruz attributed this milestone to increased public investment in the agricultural sector. He noted that while previous administrations invested between 100 and 200 million pesos, his administration invested 700 million pesos in its first year. For 2026, the state congress has approved a budget of 1,350 million pesos for the countryside.
Production has shown consistent growth, rising from 708,192 tons in 2023 and 771,281 tons in 2024 to the current 2025 figures, representing a steady growth rate of over 15.7 percent. To further enhance productivity and competitiveness, the Secretaría de Fomento Agroalimentario y Desarrollo Rural (Sefader) has entered into a collaboration agreement with the Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maíz y Trigo (CIMMyT).
