Oaxaca celebrates Taxi Driver’s Day with modernization initiatives

In celebration of Taxi Driver’s Day, the Oaxaca Secretariat of Mobility (Semovi) has recognized the essential role of taxi drivers in the city's transportation network. Semovi head Yesenia Nolasco Ramírez emphasized the importance of coordinated work with drivers to transform public transport.

To modernize the sector, Semovi is promoting the ‘TaxSí’ tool, an application that allows users to request services, ensures fare transparency, and aids in vehicle identification. Additionally, the ‘Taxi Gunaa’ initiative has been launched to promote inclusive mobility with a gender perspective by integrating more women into the public transport sector.

Due to the celebrations, Oaxaca City experienced temporary road closures on August 12, 2026. A procession of taxi drivers moved from the Instituto Tecnológico de Oaxaca toward Parque Juárez El Llano, impacting major intersections including Calzada Madero, Avenida Independencia, Pino Suárez, and Morelos. Authorities advised motorists to use alternative routes such as Avenida Hidalgo and the Periférico.
