Oaxaca conducts peaceful extraordinary municipal elections through dialogue

Oaxaca’s Secretary of Government, Jesús Romero López, reported that extraordinary municipal elections in the towns of San Juan Bautista Coixtlahuaca, San Juan Lajarcia and Mazatlán Villa de Flores were held without violence, a result he attributes to a dialogue‑focused approach by the state government.

He noted that the latest elections lowered the number of provisional municipal commissioners to ten, down from 44 during the 2016‑2022 administration, and that the share of seized municipal palaces fell by 93.1%, from 58 to just four. Romero pledged to continue prioritising agreements so communities can exercise their rights in a stable, peaceful environment.
