Oaxaca Congress approves measures to combat political violence against women
The Oaxaca State Congress, through its LXVI Legislature, has unanimously approved a measure to combat political violence against women based on gender. The legislative action aims to protect the political-electoral rights of women and ensure their participation in an environment free from discrimination and violence.
As part of this initiative, the Congress has urged the State Electoral and Citizen Participation Institute of Oaxaca (IEEPCO), the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Electoral Crimes, and political parties to implement the ‘8 de 8’ procedure for the 2026-2027 electoral process. This procedure is designed to prevent individuals with histories of gender violence or unpaid alimony obligations from seeking candidacy.
Additionally, the Congress called upon the Human Rights Defender of the People of Oaxaca (DDHPO) to conduct investigations into human rights violations against women in politics. The measure also includes a request for the Cyber Police Unit to investigate digital security matters related to political violence.
