Oaxaca de Juárez leaders signal 2027 mayoral aspirations

Political tensions are rising in Oaxaca de Juárez ahead of the 2027 elections. The current municipal president, Raymundo Chagoya Villanueva, has called for “political maturity” from the state leadership of the Morena party, Alejandro Velasco Armas.

Chagoya Villanueva criticized the party leadership for allowing premature candidacy announcements during official events, noting that such actions contradict calls for party unity and teamwork. While he has not explicitly confirmed a bid for reelection, he expressed a desire to continue his current project and noted that he possesses the right to seek it.

Concurrently, Senator Luis Alfonso Silva Romo has announced his intention to seek the municipal presidency of Oaxaca de Juárez. During his second report of results, Silva Romo stated he would wait for the official party processes and calls for participation. He emphasized his previous experience in local government and his commitment to a government focused on public services, security, and citizen participation.
