Oaxaca deploys Special Forces after attack on Mixtequilla Municipal Palace
Violence has escalated in the Istmo de Tehuantepec region of Oaxaca, Mexico, highlighted by a shooting attack on the Municipal Palace in Santa María Mixtequilla. Masked individuals targeted the building and a police patrol with gunfire, also setting a motorcycle on fire. In response, the Oaxaca government deployed the ‘Binnizá’ Special Forces to the area to conduct patrols and restore order. No fatalities or injuries were immediately reported from the Mixtequilla attack, though a separate homicide occurred in the neighboring municipality of El Espinal.
The surge in regional violence has raised concerns regarding the influence of organized crime, specifically groups linked to the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación, on local politics and public administration. Observers note that criminal elements have sought to infiltrate municipal powers and influence decisions surrounding major state projects, such as the interoceanic corridor and new industrial parks. While recent security operations have impacted some local criminal figures, the underlying connection between organized crime and political structures in the region remains a significant challenge for the administration.
