Oaxaca faces road closures from landslides and protests

The state of Oaxaca is facing significant transportation disruptions due to a combination of severe weather, geological issues, and social protests.

In the Sierra Sur, a landslide at Cerro Metate on federal highway 175 near Miahuatlán has restricted traffic between Oaxaca City and the Costa region. Authorities, including the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) and the Secretariat of National Defense, are working to clear debris. Currently, only one lane is open, causing delays for travelers heading toward Pochutla or Puerto Ángel.

Simultaneously, the Tuxtepec-Oaxaca highway is nearly impassable due to heavy rains, mud, and landslides. A geological fault at kilometer 122 of the Teotitlán-Tuxtepec route requires urgent repairs. Flooding and landslides have also been reported in the Papaloapan Basin, including San Felipe Usila and Jalapa de Díaz.

In Tehuantepec, residents from the Mixe-Zapoteca indigenous communities have initiated a blockade at the El Caracol junction. The protesters are demanding improved electrical services from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and the paving of roads connecting the Mixe-Zapoteca region to the Isthmus, specifically the San Juan Mazatlán-Santa Isabel de la Reforma stretch.
