The Oaxaca State Congress has officially approved the disappearance of powers in the municipal government of Juchitán de Zaragoza. The decision, passed with 35 votes in favor and zero against during an extraordinary session, follows a request from Governor Salomón Jara Cruz to restore governability and security in the region.

The legislative action was triggered by the arrest of Mayor Miguel Sánchez Altamirano, who faces charges of aggravated extortion and crimes against state security. Authorities allege the mayor had links to ‘Los Cromos,’ a criminal cell reportedly associated with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Following the arrest, the state government also detained Carlos Alberto P. L., known as ‘La Parca,’ and John Keny Moreno Segura, a former municipal police commissioner.

In conjunction with the political dissolution, state security forces conducted a mandatory inspection and disarmament of the Juchitán Municipal Police. During the operation, officials seized 28 long guns, 27 short guns, and 2,029 cartridges, which have been transferred to the state's general armory.

As part of the transition, Governor Jara Cruz will appoint a provisional municipal commissioner to manage the city's administration and public services until new elections are held.
