Oaxaca implements new tourism and commercialization strategies
The Oaxaca State Congress has approved a motion urging the State Secretariat of Tourism (Sectur Oaxaca) to develop a comprehensive strategy to promote the Mazatec towns and communities within the Sierra de Flores Magón region. The initiative aims to increase local, national, and international tourism to drive economic growth and sustainable development while highlighting the area's cultural, linguistic, and natural heritage. Data from the 2020 Census indicates that approximately 68.75 percent of the population in representative Mazatec municipalities speaks an indigenous language.
Separately, the Oaxaca Secretariat of Economic Development (Sedeco) reported progress through its ‘Orgullo Oaxaca’ program, which facilitates the commercialization of regional products. The strategy has established over 50 points of sale across six Mexican states, including a recent collaboration with Grupo Chedraui. To date, the program has incorporated nearly 20 companies and over 150 products, generating more than 8 million pesos in sales and supporting direct employment for over 400 families.
