Oaxaca indigenous teachers end 72-hour strike amid unresolved demands

Indigenous education teachers from Section 22 of the CNTE in Oaxaca have ended a 72-hour strike and protest, though they warn of potential future unrest. The teachers concluded their demonstration with a march from the State Institute of Public Education (IEEPO) to the city's Zócalo after reaching an agreement with the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP).

Despite lifting the blockade, union representatives expressed dissatisfaction with the negotiations, describing the government's response as “null.” They criticized the lack of decision-making officials present during meetings. The teachers' primary demands include the recognition of the General Directorate of Education for Original Peoples (DGEIPO) and the filling of between 1,500 and 1,800 teaching and administrative vacancies in initial, preschool, and primary education.

Additional grievances include calls for an audit of IEEPO regarding alleged resource diversion, the regularization of certain workers, and progress on the Oaxaca Indigenous Education Law. The union has set a tentative date of October 19 to resume negotiations, noting that workers will decide whether future actions will be local or federal.
