Oaxaca launches waste removal operation in Puerto Escondido
The government of Oaxaca has launched the ‘¡Limpiemos Puerto!’ operation to remove accumulated solid waste in the tourist destination of Puerto Escondido. The initiative follows the closure of the local final waste disposal site, a problem that local authorities were unable to resolve.
Coordinated by the state agency for solid waste management, the operation involves multiple institutions, including the secretariats of Government, Environment, Biodiversity, Energy, and Sustainability, as well as the State Forestry Commission. The cleanup effort utilizes 90 workers from various agencies and municipal services, along with multiple collection units and transfer boxes.
The process begins with removing waste from public roads, followed by residential areas. The collected refuse will be sent to a transfer center and then to a final disposal site in the Costa region to ensure public and environmental health for residents and visitors.
