Oaxaca marks artisan anniversary amid regional poverty challenges

Oaxaca is currently highlighting both its deep cultural heritage and its significant socio-economic challenges. The Casa de las Artesanías de Oaxaca, a collective of 58 artisans, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. President Guillermo Villanueva Reyes noted that the collective serves as a space to preserve ancestral knowledge through various crafts, including wood, clay, and textiles, ensuring these traditions are passed down to future generations.

Contrasting this cultural milestone is the ongoing struggle with poverty in the region. Data from the first quarter of 2026 indicates that 52.7 percent of the Oaxacan population lives in working poverty, where earnings are insufficient to cover basic food baskets. With an informal labor rate near 80 percent and an average monthly salary of 4,950 pesos, many communities lack basic services. In response, the Movimiento Antorchista is organizing residents to advocate for improved access to health, education, housing, and dignified wages.
