Oaxaca teachers' strike shuts city, costing up to 2 billion pesos

A prolonged teachers' protest in Oaxaca has blocked the city centre, airport and main roads, halting commercial activity. Business leaders say daily economic flow has dropped by about 100 million pesos, roughly half of the usual 205 million‑peso daily turnover.

The chambers of commerce estimate cumulative losses between 1.2 billion and 2 billion pesos, citing cancelled hotel reservations, disrupted supply chains and the threat of business closures. The strike is affecting thousands of workers in tourism, retail and services, and has intensified street vending and hampered basic services such as waste collection and water supply.
