Oaxaca teachers' union Section 22 votes to continue national strike

The Section 22 of the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) in Oaxaca held an internal vote on June 12‑13 to decide the future of the nationwide teachers' protest that began on June 1. The result was a narrow majority – 6,337 votes to keep the strike versus 6,162 for a temporary pause – confirming the continuation of the national walkout.

The vote also rejected a proposal to dissolve the USICAMM (7,904 against, 4,791 for) and overwhelmingly opposed the 2007 ISSSTE law (2,095 for, 10,240 against). In contrast, a proposal for an interdisciplinary route involving Segob, CNTE and ISSSTE received strong backing (9,049 for, 3,043 against). The decision will be presented to the CNTE’s Asamblea Nacional Representativa for next steps. Meanwhile, some protest structures were dismantled around Mexico City’s Zócalo as authorities removed barricades.

The teachers continue to demand the abolition of USICAMM, repeal of the ISSSTE law, and improvements to the pension system, sustaining pressure on the government as the strike persists across the country.
