Oaxaca to host Afro-Mexican Guelaguetza traditions
The Guelaguetza Afro La Rejunjuneada will take place in Oaxaca to celebrate Afro-Mexican traditions and identity. The festivities are scheduled to begin on October 17 in San Marquitos with storytelling sessions, followed by a photography exhibition titled ‘Luz, Tiempo y Memoria’ at the Municipal Palace corridor.
The main celebrations will culminate on October 19 in Chacahua La Isla, within the municipality of Villa de Tututepec, marking the Day of the Afro-Mexican Black People. The event will feature participation from 10 municipalities in the Costa region, showcasing various cultural expressions, dances, and traditions.
Key activities include the ‘Danza del Toro de Petate’ in the Tututepec public plaza and the ‘Sabores afromexicanos’ food culture expo-sale. The program will conclude with a traditional convite involving local delegations and residents, featuring dances, sones, and jarabes accompanied by a local band.
