Obama Presidential Center projected to cost $1 billion
The construction cost for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago is now expected to reach approximately $1 billion, nearly triple the original 2016 estimate of $300 million to $350 million. The Obama Foundation confirmed the updated projection, noting that the funds are being raised through private contributions rather than taxpayer money.
The foundation attributed the cost increases to several factors, including investments in additional public art, insurance, project management, exhibit installations, and scope changes within the campus. The center, which includes a museum, athletic center, and a branch of the Chicago Public Library, officially opened in June 2026, five years behind its original target.
Financial disclosures also indicate shifts in the foundation's broader operations. Donations and grants reportedly declined from approximately $195 million in 2024 to $151 million in 2025, while liabilities rose from $35 million to roughly $103.5 million during the same period. Outstanding borrowing also increased significantly to approximately $63.5 million by July 2026.
