Obby Khan resigns as Progressive Conservative leader

Obby Khan has resigned as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party following a confidence motion initiated by Agassiz MLA Jodie Byram. Although the majority of the PC caucus initially voted to maintain confidence in Khan, he stepped down days later, citing ongoing attempts by a minority of MLAs to undermine his leadership.

Political science expert Kelly Saunders of Brandon University described Byram’s decision to trigger the vote as a high-risk gamble. Saunders suggested the move may have been an attempt to replace leadership quickly to improve electoral prospects in Winnipeg before the next election, slated for October 2027, though noted the timing could negatively impact the party.
