Obby Khan resigns from Manitoba Progressive Conservatives
Obby Khan has resigned from the Manitoba Progressive Conservative caucus to serve as an independent MLA for Fort Whyte. Khan cited internal party infighting and a desire to maintain personal integrity as the reasons for his departure, noting that he would not allow a struggle for leadership titles to supersede his responsibilities to Manitobans.
Despite recently winning a confidence vote within the caucus, Khan decided to step down after learning that party members were planning to meet to subvert that vote. Following his resignation, the Progressive Conservative caucus selected La Vérendrye MLA Konrad Narth to serve as the interim leader.
During the first question period of the legislature’s fall sitting, Khan was absent from the chamber. Interim leader Konrad Narth used the session to press the New Democrats on issues regarding affordability, community safety, and healthcare accessibility. The governing New Democrats characterized the opposition as disorganized and stated they would remain focused on their mandate rather than the internal turmoil within the Progressive Conservative party.
