Oberhausen church conversion to apartments nears contract

Negotiations are in advanced stages to convert the vacant St. Johannes Evangelist Catholic church in Oberhausen into residential apartments. Pascal Sommer, Managing Director of the Parish Association for Catholic Parishes in Oberhausen, stated that discussions with an investor are constructive and that a contract agreement is expected soon.

The project aims to repurpose the building, which has been empty since its final service in February 2024. While previous plans from 2020 suggested creating approximately 800 square meters of housing on the second and third levels—specifically intended for seniors—the current talks appear more concrete than in previous years. Approximately 650 square meters of the building will remain available for community use, including a library, group rooms, and religious services.
