Oberhausen couple auctions limited sculpture on ‘Bares für Rares’

A couple from Oberhausen, Nicole and Heiner, appeared on the television program ‘Bares für Rares’ to auction a limited-edition sculpture of the Mondsichelmadonna. Created in 1970 by artist Fritz Theilmann, the sculpture was one of only 99 produced.

The couple, who operate a funeral home, intended to donate the entire proceeds from the sale to hospice work in Oberhausen. They sought a sale price between 300 and 500 euros. Expert Colmar Schulte-Goltz estimated the value of the piece at 350 to 400 euros, noting that the visible verdigris (Grünspan) was a unique characteristic of this specific model.

During the negotiation process, dealer Leo Leo noted that the verdigris present on the figure is ‘a bit toxic,’ adding a point of discussion to the appraisal.
