Oberschleißheim manages abandoned vehicle issue on Hirschplanallee

An increasing number of abandoned, rusting vehicles are occupying parking spaces on Hirschplanallee in Oberschleißheim, Germany. These vehicles, often marked with red stickers, pose potential risks to the environment and traffic flow, causing frustration for local residents and pedestrians.

Under the Bavarian Road and Way Act (BayStrWG), the municipality of Oberschleißheim is responsible for managing these issues as the road construction authority. While the police first investigate potential criminal offenses or regulatory violations to identify owners, the municipality must intervene if vehicles remain unattended. This process involves significant costs, as the local government must often advance funds for the removal and disposal of the vehicles. Although authorities are permitted to retain removed vehicles until costs are reimbursed, recovery remains difficult if owners are untraceable or insolvent.
