Oberstown detention campus workers picket over staffing dispute

Workers at the Oberstown Children Detention Campus have initiated a picket outside the Department of Children following a breakdown in negotiations regarding staffing and resources. The protest coincides with a 10-hour work stoppage, marking the third instance of industrial action this month after union members voted for a full withdrawal of labour.

The trade union Fórsa claims that inadequate staffing levels have led to reported assaults on staff and injuries requiring hospital treatment. Assistant General Secretary Deirdre O’Connell stated that staffing has not kept pace with increased capacity at the facility, noting difficulties in both recruiting and retaining specialized workers capable of managing children with complex needs.

While management expressed regret over the work stoppage and stated that engagement through established industrial relations processes is ongoing, the union argues that management has refused to include essential recruitment measures in their business case to the Department of Children. The dispute follows recent decisions to increase the detention center's capacity.
