Oberstown staff begin work stoppage after union talks collapse

Staff at the Oberstown Children Detention Campus in north Co. Dublin have commenced an eight-hour work stoppage following the collapse of negotiations between the trade union Fórsa and campus management. The industrial action, scheduled from 9am to 5pm, follows a period of work-to-rule action that began in late June.

The dispute centers on resourcing and safe staffing levels. Fórsa national secretary Hazel Nolan stated that staff safety and the safety of the detained young people are inseparable, but noted that talks failed because management refused to include key elements of the union's claim in the business case submitted to the Department of Children. Specifically, the union is seeking measures to address recruitment difficulties.

Fórsa expressed frustration that management suggested these issues be handled through local bargaining, despite acknowledging that current budgets are insufficient to resolve them. Further work stoppages are planned for August 18 and August 25. A spokesperson for the Department of Children noted that weekly meetings have been held since March and expressed disappointment that the union chose to escalate to work stoppages rather than providing feedback on management's latest proposal.
