Oberwiera wind turbine dismantled after noise complaints

The 81‑metre Vestas turbine erected near Oberwiera, Saxony in December 2023 was taken down after residents complained of a persistent low‑frequency hum. The turbine, which could supply electricity to roughly 5,000 households, was within legal noise limits, but the nearby Ulbricht family documented disturbances day and night. Local authorities found no regulatory breach, yet the persistent annoyance prompted the municipal council, where the turbine’s investor also serves, to approve its removal.

Demolition work is now underway, with rotor blades already on the ground and the generator housing being disassembled. The case highlights challenges for Germany’s wind‑energy rollout, where several turbines have been decommissioned while new installations lag behind national targets.
