Obesity crisis poses growing public health challenge
Health professionals and statistical data highlight the growing crisis of obesity in children and adults across Latin America. In Argentina, data from the Fourth National Survey of Risk Factors indicates that 66.1% of the adult population is overweight, with 32.4% classified as obese. Among children and adolescents aged 5 to 17, 41.1% have excess weight, and nearly half of those are obese.
Experts emphasize that obesity is a complex, chronic, and multifactorial disease that cannot be addressed solely through individual willpower or diet. It is linked to serious health complications, including insulin resistance, hypertension, metabolic alterations, fatty liver, and early-onset cardiovascular disease.
Addressing the issue requires collective action and public policies. Recommended interventions include improving access to nutritious foods, strengthening food education programs, enhancing school environments, and providing safe spaces for physical activity. Professionals stress the importance of moving away from social normalization of unhealthy habits and instead focusing on multidisciplinary health support and preventative environments.
