Obesity linked to biological sexual dysfunction
During the Value Exp Latin American Forum in Panama, Colombian gynecologist and sexologist Fernando Rosero highlighted the significant link between obesity and sexual dysfunction. Rosero noted that biological mechanisms, rather than just psychological factors, drive these issues. Inflammation from excess adipose tissue can disrupt hormone production and blood circulation.
In men, these biological changes can lead to decreased testosterone levels and erectile dysfunction. In women, hormonal and vascular alterations can result in decreased libido and changes in lubrication. Rosero stated that “two out of three patients with overweight and obesity will experience sexual dysfunction due to a biological cause.”
Beyond physical symptoms, the specialist emphasized the psychological impact, noting that social stigma and negative body image can lead to insecurity, shame, and avoidance of intimacy.
