Obesity recognized as a complex chronic disease

Modern medicine and the World Health Organization (WHO) have shifted the understanding of obesity, reclassifying it as a chronic, complex, and multifactorial disease rather than a simple lack of willpower.

Factors contributing to obesity include biological and genetic predispositions, hormonal regulation affecting metabolism, psychological aspects such as stress and sleep deprivation, and social environmental conditions. Experts emphasize that rapid or drastic dieting can be counterproductive, as the body may break down muscle tissue instead of fat stores. Maintaining muscle mass is considered vital for metabolic health, energy management, and joint stability.
