Obesity research advances toward oral treatments

At the 'SIO WiP – Obesity Work in Progress' national congress in Palermo, medical experts and pharmaceutical representatives discussed the rapid evolution of obesity treatments. The discussion focused on the progress of incretin-based therapies, which have significantly expanded treatment options in recent years.

Medical professionals noted a shift from daily injections to weekly injectable therapies, with oral medications expected to follow soon. Specifically, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recently approved the molecule orforglipron, with final approval anticipated shortly. This development is expected to facilitate commercialization in various nations, including Italy. Oral therapies are viewed as a significant advancement for patient convenience, helping to overcome the psychological barriers associated with needle-based treatments.
