Obesity specialist warns of average 3-5 kg summer weight gain
Professor Gontrand López-Nava, an obesity specialist and director of the Bariatric Endoscopy Unit at HM Sanchinarro, has warned that people gain an average of 3 to 5 kilograms during the summer holidays.
López-Nava notes that weight gain can pose a serious health risk, particularly for individuals already struggling with obesity or overweight. He emphasizes that obesity is a leading cause of preventable death, increasing the risk of cardiovascular issues, type 2 diabetes, and various cancers. The increase is typically attributed to the abandonment of diets, reduced physical activity, and poor nutritional control during vacations.
Additionally, the expert warns of the ‘rebound effect’ for those using weight-loss medications, noting that stopping treatment can lead to rapid weight regain. To mitigate these risks, he recommends moderating food portions while still enjoying local cuisine, maintaining aerobic and strength training routines, and setting realistic goals to prevent significant weight gain.
