Obesity treatment requires personalized approach, says specialist

During the Second Conference on Metabolism, Endocrinology, and Thyroid at the Universidad Autónoma de Chile, medical specialists discussed the complexities of treating obesity. Dr. Carolina Ramos Ruiz, a surgeon specializing in clinical nutrition, emphasized that the choice between pharmacological treatments and metabolic surgery must be personalized for each patient.

Dr. Ramos Ruiz noted that success should not be measured solely by weight loss. Instead, medical decisions must account for a patient’s associated diseases, clinical history, and individual life circumstances. Because obesity is a chronic and recurrent disease, the specialist advocated for an integral approach involving multidisciplinary teams to provide long-term management.
