Obituaries: Dr. Owen Nelson and Professor Jerold Nelson Pass Away in July 2026

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Owen A. Nelson died on July 13, 2026, at age 75 after a battle with stage‑four pancreatic cancer. Born on May 9, 1951, in Springerville, Arizona, he earned chemical‑engineering degrees from the University of Arizona, served as a U.S. Air Force major, and completed medical training at UC San Diego. He practiced orthopedics for more than four decades in Texas, Pennsylvania and Belfast, Maine, where he was active in the local curling club. He is survived by his wife Misuk, seven children and several grandchildren.

Professor Jerold (Jerry) Nelson, aged 88, died on July 23, 2026. A native of Minneapolis, he earned a Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from UC Berkeley after serving in the Coast Guard. He spent most of his career teaching at the University of Washington’s Library School, retiring as professor emeritus in 2003. He is survived by his wife Nola Sterling, four children, a stepdaughter, a sister and nine grandchildren.
