Obmep mathematics olympiad enters second phase in Brazil

The 21st edition of the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (Obmep) is holding its second phase this Saturday. More than 900,000 students, selected from an initial pool of 18.3 million, are participating in the exam. The test consists of six discursive questions to be completed within three hours.

Organized by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MEC) and the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI), the competition awards 8,450 national medals and 51,000 honorable mentions. Winners can access the Junior Scientific Initiation Program (PIC Jr.), which provides advanced mathematics classes and monthly stipends of R$ 300 through the CNPq.

This year also marks the debut of the Obmep Mirim Teachers' Olympiad. Aimed at educators teaching grades 1 through 5 in both public and private schools, this new category offers medals and professional training opportunities, including in-person activities in Rio de Janeiro for gold medalists.
