Obrist Engineering subsidiaries file for bankruptcy

Three companies within the Obrist group, including Obrist Powertrain, Obrist Technologies, and the German unit Obrist DE, have filed for bankruptcy with total debts amounting to approximately 31.8 million euros. While the parent company, Obrist Engineering, was not included in the filings, the subsidiaries are facing insolvency proceedings in the Feldkirch regional court.

The group gained international attention for its ‘HyperHybrid’ technology, an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) system designed for the Tesla Model 3. The Mark II prototype replaced the standard battery with a smaller 17.3 kWh unit and added a 40 kW two-cylinder gasoline generator in the frunk to charge the battery. The company claimed this setup could achieve a range of 1,000 kilometers while consuming only 2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.

Despite marketing the technology for over a decade, the company failed to reach mass production. Founder Frank Obrist cited high R&D costs, unsuccessful investor negotiations, and a general crisis in the European automotive sector as primary reasons for the collapse. The shift toward falling battery costs and widespread charging infrastructure also diminished the commercial competitiveness of the generator-supported solution.
