OBS trucks: Defining the old body style enthusiast term

The term “OBS” is an abbreviation used by enthusiasts to refer to “old body style” trucks. The term's origins are often linked to 1997, when Ford transitioned the F-150 to a 10th-generation body style while the F-250 and F-350 platforms retained the previous design. This distinction reportedly led dealers and mechanics to use the term to differentiate between the new body style (NBS) and the existing one.

Within the enthusiast community, there is ongoing debate regarding which specific models qualify as OBS. Generally accepted classifications include 1992–1996 Ford F-150s and 1992–1997 Ford F-250 and F-350 pickups. For Chevrolet and GMC, the term typically refers to the GMT400 C/K platforms produced between 1988 and 1998, though the C3500HD Crew Cab continued on this platform until 2002.
