Obscura VPN launches native Linux application
Obscura VPN has released a native desktop application for Linux, featuring both a graphical user interface (GUI) and an experimental command-line interface (CLI). The release eliminates the need for users to manually configure WireGuard settings. The app provides official packages for several distributions, including Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, and RHEL.
Founded by former Bitcoin Core contributor Carl Dong, Obscura VPN utilizes a two-party relay design. In this setup, Obscura acts as the entry node while another provider, Mullvad, serves as the exit node. This architecture is intended to prevent any single provider from possessing a complete picture of a user's browsing habits. The service supports a QUIC-based stealth protocol designed to disguise VPN traffic as standard HTTP/3 web browsing.
In addition to the Linux launch, the company is transitioning its codebase to the GPLv3 open-source license. The service allows for anonymous registration via randomly generated account numbers and supports privacy-focused payment methods such as Monero and Bitcoin via the Lightning Network.
