Brazil methane emissions: 37 solutions proposed to reduce climate impact
The Observatório do Clima has released a report detailing 37 specific solutions to reduce methane (CH4) emissions in Brazil. According to data from the Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Removals Estimation System (SEEG), Brazil released 21 million tons of methane into the atmosphere in 2024, ranking it as the fifth largest emitter globally, following China, the United States, India, and Russia.
The proposed solutions target four primary sectors: agriculture, waste, land use/forests, and energy. The agricultural sector is the largest contributor, accounting for approximately 75.8% of national emissions (15.7 million tons). Proposed measures for this sector include improved animal management, territorial planning, and increased access to technical assistance and credit. The waste sector follows, contributing 16% of emissions, with solutions focusing on landfill governance and the elimination of open dumps.
Additionally, the report highlights the potential of biogas and biomethane as tools for decarbonization. Instituto MBCBrasil announced a comprehensive study on the biomethane market, noting its effectiveness for heavy transport decarbonization. The integration of biogas capture from landfills and sewage systems is identified as a key strategy for both the waste and energy sectors to mitigate climate impact.
