Obsesión becomes the highest-grossing original film of the decade

The film ‘Obsesión’, released by Universal, has become the highest-grossing original movie of the decade. During the mid-August 2026 weekend, it surpassed Disney Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ to claim the title, reaching a global box office total of $498 million compared to ‘Elemental’s $495 million.

The two films had vastly different trajectories; while ‘Elemental’ faced a difficult start and was viewed as a failure, ‘Obsesión’ became a phenomenon from its first day.

In addition to its box office milestone, ‘Obsesión’ is positioned to have the highest profit margin of 2026. Produced on a budget of only $750,000, the film has earned 664 times its production cost. This efficiency means Universal is projected to see higher profits from ‘Obsesión’ than Sony does from ‘Spider-Man: A New Day’, despite the latter’s much higher total gross of over $2 billion.
