Obsession horror film seeks Golden Globe recognition in comedy category

The horror film ‘Obsession’, written and directed by Curry Barker, has become a major commercial success, earning over $500 million worldwide on a $750,000 budget. Due to the absence of a dedicated horror category at the Golden Globes, the film’s distributor, Focus Features, has decided to submit the movie for consideration in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category.

This decision has drawn criticism from commentators who argue the film should be classified as a drama. The film explores themes of violence and obsession stemming from a character's fulfilled desires. The submission must now be approved by an organizing subcommittee. This follows a precedent set by other horror films like ‘Get Out’ and ‘The Substance’, which also competed in comedy categories before receiving Academy Award nominations.

Following the film's success, director Curry Barker has teased the possibility of expanding the ‘Obsession’ universe. While a direct sequel is complicated by the film's ending, Barker has suggested an anthology approach or a return of lead actors Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette.
