Obstetrician clarifies myths regarding sexual activity during pregnancy

In observance of Pregnant Women's Day, gynecologist and obstetrician Paulo Nogueira has addressed common myths regarding sexual activity during pregnancy. He emphasizes that in uncomplicated pregnancies, sexual intercourse is safe and can offer various health benefits.

Nogueira explains that the fetus is well-protected by the uterus, muscular walls, membranes, and amniotic fluid. Furthermore, the cervix acts as a barrier between the vagina and the uterine cavity, preventing direct interference with the baby. He notes that misconceptions, such as the idea that intercourse could physically harm the baby, are unfounded.

Maintaining a healthy sexual life can contribute to overall well-being by releasing hormones that reduce stress and improve sleep. While sexual activity can continue throughout pregnancy, Nogueira suggests that during the third trimester, women may need to adapt positions—such as lying on the side, using a quadruped position, or having the woman on top—to ensure greater comfort.
