Obuasi Mine hosts inaugural West Africa mine rescue competition

The AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, in partnership with Endeavour Mining, is hosting the first West Africa Mine Rescue and Emergency Response Competition (WAMRERC 2026). The five-day event brings together emergency response teams from Ghana, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, and Senegal.

The competition aims to test technical skills, improve emergency preparedness, and foster knowledge exchange across the West African mining sector. Under the theme, “Together, Saving Lives Through Preparedness and Excellence,” the initiative seeks to build a regional network of professionals to support coordinated responses to mining-related incidents.

Dr. Samuel Boakye Pobee, Managing Director of the Obuasi Mine, emphasized that the event's value lies in creating lasting partnerships and improving technical capacity rather than just winning trophies. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, also highlighted that worker safety must remain the central priority of mining operations.
