Obuasi SHTS sexual abuse scandal prompts calls for independent inquiry

Allegations of sexual abuse involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, have triggered widespread calls for accountability and systemic reform in Ghana. An investigation by JoyNews reported that as many as 19 female students were victims of sexual harassment, assault, and rape.

The parliamentary Minority and the Minority Women’s Caucus have demanded an independent inquiry to determine if political interference allowed earlier complaints against Abdulai to go unpunished. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has stated it will not interfere with law enforcement investigations, following the suspension of party member Daniel Nortey for comments regarding the case. Abdulai, who has resigned from his position and his role as a Juaben NDC constituency secretary, has been granted self-recognisance bail.

In response to the scandal, the Ministry of Education announced plans to create direct reporting channels, including a potential hotline, to allow students and parents to bypass local school authorities when reporting abuse. Additionally, the civil society group Save the Mining Communities-Ghana (SMC-Gh) has called for urgent child protection reforms and psychosocial support for survivors.
