Obuasi Senior High Technical School sexual abuse investigation

Investigations are ongoing into allegations of sexual abuse involving female students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in Ghana. The school’s headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service and interdicted by the Ghana Education Service (GES) following an investigation into the matter.

Concerns have been raised regarding systemic safeguarding failures at the institution. Amartei K. Amartey, a safeguarding officer, identified the practice of sending female students to deliver food from the dining hall to staff residences as a significant red flag that leaves students vulnerable and breaches standard protective protocols.

Parents have also expressed deep concern over a perceived lack of formal safeguarding training for teachers. Francis Deamenu, a parent, noted that the situation has undermined the trust between families and the education system, emphasizing that schools must ensure student safety alongside academic instruction.
