Ocaña Ombudsman resigns amid ELN information leak investigation
Ever Pallares Baene, the regional Ombudsman of Ocaña, Colombia, has resigned following a preliminary investigation by the Prosecutor's Office regarding the alleged leaking of confidential information to the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group.
The investigation stems from allegations that sensitive data concerning social leaders was leaked from the Ocaña regional office. This information reportedly matched a threatening message sent to a human rights defender in February 2025 by the ELN's Northeastern War Front. The complainant noted that the details provided in the threat were highly specific, matching information known only to the Ombudsman's office and the National Army.
The Defensoría del Pueblo confirmed the resignation, stating the move is intended to preserve institutional trust and ensure the judicial process proceeds without interference. Pallares Baene has denied the accusations, stating, “I am transparent and am willing to appear before the Prosecutor's Office to allow the corresponding investigation to take place.” He also noted that his resignation was planned as he intends to run in the 2027 regional elections.
