Occitanie faces challenges in fulfilling rail reopening promises

Ten years after the launch of the General Assembly of Rail and Intermodality (EGRIM) in Occitanie, the region faces challenges in fulfilling its railway reopening promises. While the region successfully managed the transfer of the Montréjeau-Luchon line—which saw passenger numbers reach 125,000, far exceeding the expected 60,000—other projects have stalled.

Specifically, the Limoux-Quillan and Rodez-Séverac lines have been officially suspended. The Alès-Bessèges line project is also experiencing delays. Despite the initial enthusiasm and extensive public consultation that founded the EGRIM initiative in 2016, the region's ability to meet its ambitious rail connectivity goals remains uncertain due to various logistical and financial difficulties.
