Occupational therapy in Germany emphasizes holistic, client‑centered care
Occupational therapists in Germany support people with physical, mental or cognitive impairments to regain independence in daily activities. They assess each client’s life situation, phase, environment, personality and goals, using a biopsychosocial model that links bodily, psychological and social factors.
According to Jessica Liers of the German Association of Occupational Therapy (DVE), therapy focuses on both “what” and “how” the client acts, building trust over the first few sessions and fostering cooperative communication. Clients receive prescriptions for therapy when health issues limit their everyday tasks.
