Ocean conservation initiatives held in Brazil

Various initiatives in Brazil are focusing on ocean conservation and the integration of science and engineering to support the UN Decade of Ocean Science (2021–2030).

In São Paulo, the University of São Paulo (USP) is hosting a workshop to celebrate 70 years of its Department of Naval and Ocean Engineering. The event aims to bridge the gap between oceanography and naval engineering, discussing digital transitions, climate change impacts, and the use of data science and digital twins in maritime engineering to promote ocean sustainability.

In Rio de Janeiro, the second edition of Rio Ocean Week is being held at the Museum of Tomorrow. The event utilizes art, culture, and science to engage the public in marine preservation. Discussions include addressing ocean pollution, specifically the issue of waste in Brazilian waters. Research indicates that while cigarette butts are common on tourist beaches, remote areas often face waste from navigation, and coastal regions near Rio de Janeiro and Niterói face complex waste management challenges.
