Ocean Networks Canada joins Pacific Ocean Neutrino Experiment

Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), a division of the University of Victoria, is participating in the Pacific Ocean Neutrino Experiment (P-ONE). This multi-partner project aims to create a deep-sea neutrino telescope in the Pacific Ocean to study cosmic particles.

Because neutrinos are nearly massless and difficult to detect, the project requires massive, highly sensitive instrumentation. The installation will occur over several years, involving the deployment of 70 mooring lines. Each line will feature 20 instruments designed to communicate with one another and transmit live data back to shore.

ONC is co-engineering critical infrastructure, including deployment frames and junction boxes, which serve as the control centers for each mooring line. The project leverages the existing ONC Neptune subsea observatory, which provides a telecommunications cable located hundreds of kilometers offshore from Vancouver Island.
