Ocean sustainability and blue economy leaders call for improved governance
Industry leaders and experts are focusing on ocean sustainability and the blue economy through new summits and calls for improved governance. At the CONXEMAR 2026 trade fair, representatives from fishing fleets and processing industries emphasized the need for stronger international coordination, scientific cooperation, and traceability to protect squid resources. Challenges cited include illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and a lack of comprehensive stock assessments, particularly regarding jumbo flying squid in the South Pacific.
In support of these maritime goals, the FARO Summit (Future Alliance for the Oceans) will be held in Vigo and Baiona, Spain, on November 19 and 20. Organized by the Vigo Port Authority and the Baiona City Council, the summit will gather over 50 experts from the scientific, maritime, and fishing sectors. The event aims to drive innovation, decarbonization, and marine sustainability, marking the tenth anniversary of the Blue Growth strategy.
